An interface provides communication between two components of a computer system. When one of the components is the human user, it is called a user interface, which has input and output functionalities. The former includes buttons, sensors and switches, while the latter could be bulbs, buzzers, speakers or, most commonly, screens. A user interface is a logical interface, meaning that certain user actions necessitate a particular response from the computer. While devices such as a computer mouse can only send data, a touchscreen can both send and receive data.

The goods and products are bought in the institution's shop and delivered to the inmate. The disadvantage is that the list of products is limited by the shop's selection. The advantage is that it eliminates the need to visit a shop in person and stand in a queue, and the goods don't need to pass checks.
