Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a way of identifying objects using electromagnetic waves. An RFID tag consists of a transponder, receiver and transmitter, and transmits data back to a reader on receiving an interrogation pulse. A listening device invented by Leon Theremin in 1945 is considered a precursor to the RFID, while the first RFID tag was patented by Mario Cardullo in 1973. Different RFID systems use different frequencies across different ranges, with modern implementations ranging from agriculture and logistics to healthcare, transportation and retail.
