The practice dates back to the 1990s, when SEO specialists tried to ‘game’ the system, maximizing the number of keywords on a given page. Google introduced the PageRank (PR) algorithm in 2001 to show more relevant search results first. Today, online promotion strategies largely rely on social media platforms.
