The Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an open-source communications protocol designed for correspondence and exchange of presence information. It was developed by Jeremie Miller and released as Jabber in 1999. XMPP was specified by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 2004. The protocol can be used to send text and voice messages, as well as documents and video files. Key features include decentralization, open standardization, TLS encryption, SASL authentication, and the isolation of servers including on intranets. Google Talk and LiveJournal are based on XMPP.
