Family of mobile operating systems developed by Microsoft to replace Windows Mobile and Zune, first released in 2010. It uses a hybrid kernel based on the Windows NT Kernel, unlike its CE-based predecessor. The UI is based on Microsoft's Metro design language. Updates are fulfilled via Zune Software and over-the-air. Numerous manufacturers produced devices running on Windows Phone, including HTC, LG, Samsung, Nokia, Toshiba, Acer and Alcatel. Development on the most recent OS, Windows 10 Mobile, ceased in 2017, with support ending in January 2020.
