The concept of the internet of things describes a network of objects that communicate with each other and the wider environment. The term was coined in 1999 by Kevin Ashton, founder of MIT's Auto-ID Labs. The term includes autonomous devices connected to the internet that can be controlled remotely, and often includes objects with sensors. It has many applications today, including in agriculture, retail, smart homes, healthcare, logistics, defence and mining. According to Cisco Systems, ‘things’ connected to the internet surpassed the number of internet-connected humans in 2008 or 2009.
